Hi I’m Jean Beanie. I’m 51 years young and I feel the healthiest I’ve ever been! I put my vibrant health down to my healthy lifestyle which involves eating a plant based diet which I believe has significantly improved my fitness and recovery time, stamina, energy levels and overall my zest for life.
My food blog was born from my passion and love for food and a desire to help others who are transitioning to eating a plant based diet. The recipes I share from my kitchen are recipes I use all the time when cooking for family and friends; all created for their amazing taste using combinations of ingredients that really satisfy the taste-buds in a clean way, variety (there are so many healthy plant based foods out there that most people don’t even know exist) and recipes that nourish your body with good nutrition. So if you are just starting out on your Vegan journey and feel overwhelmed about what you can and can’t eat and whether you are getting the right nutrition in your food or if you’ve been a Vegan for a while and eat a lot of the processed Vegan foods and don’t know what kind of food to prepare and how to prepare it, then my ‘cooked from scratch’ recipes will hopefully inspire you even more to get back in your kitchen and cook. Cooking plant-based meals for yourself or your family is by no means difficult or boring and I’m sure cooking this way will inspire your culinary creativity into creating your very own healthy plant based meals.
I haven’t always been this healthy though… 9 years ago I felt uncomfortable in my own skin, I was just over 10 stone, I felt frumpy and middle aged, I drank too much vino and although a Vegetarian I ate all the wrong things…which included a lot of cheese and pasta!! My diet was mainly processed foods and the dreaded ‘ready meal’ which really doesn’t cut the mustard in terms of giving your body the right nutrition, in fact there’s pretty much zilch nutrition in a ‘ready meal’. So with this diet I gradually put on weight and when I tried to shift the excess weight through exercise, no matter how much I tried the weight just didn’t want to come off which made me feel even more frustrated with my body. I felt really unhappy and gradually my self-esteem plummeted… so I remained the same weight until I changed my diet.
Then one day a health mad friend of mine introduced me to the world of smoothies, super-foods and the Vitamix!! The Vitamix is the best piece of kit I have in my kitchen, that’s for sure. So I began to become more conscious of my diet, eating very healthily, no processed foods, always cooking from scratch and as a result I found the weight just dropped off me and I achieved a healthy constant weight of 8st 7lbs. Even though I’d adopted this healthier lifestyle I still didn’t feel at my optimum health, there was something missing and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Things completely changed for me when I became Vegan! My eyes were fully opened. This felt so right for me to pursue this way of living, not just for body health benefits, ethically, spiritually and emotionally too.
My Vegan Awakening was quick, overnight in fact, and I decided I wasn’t going to eat meat or dairy ever again! When I found out the REAL truth behind the farming industry and how the animals are treated so abhorrently in all aspects of ‘the process’ of bringing meat and dairy to the consumer’s table, it disgusted me and made me feel, quite frankly, ashamed to be human.
Animals are sentient beings and feel pain just like we do, they want to live a joyful life too, they want to be with their young, raise and nurture them in a natural environment and be left to do that in peace. I feel it to my core now that it’s so very wrong for us to consume their flesh or any animal by-product in any way, shape or form. Living the Vegan Life means honouring all animals (fish too), by not eating any meat, dairy or animal products by adopting a whole foods plant based diet.
I believe a positive mindset married with looking after your body and nourishing it fully is what brings balance in your life which ultimately brings you more joy and isn’t that what we are all seeking, joy in all that we do.
On the Why Vegan page I talk in more detail about why eating a plant based diet could be the next step for your health & well-being and I also recommend videos that might be useful for you to watch. Being informed is very important, as once you know the facts you can then make balanced choices.
